Revolutionary War, private, 3rd South Carolina Regiment
George and his brothers, Jesse and David, and cousins, Jacob, William, and James, moved to Tattnall County and settled near the Ohoopee River, where George bought 575 acres from Samuel Parrish. He gradually acquired more land and became a man of some affluence through these large land holdings.
In 1819, when Appling County, which lay across the Altamaha River from Tattnall County, opened to settlers, most of George's sons moved into the new country and settled there. The 1820 census shows George living in Tattnall County, but he appears listed as a resident of Appling County, in the Land Lottery of that year. He died there about two years later, age about 80,
Record is found in the deed records at Charleston, South Carolina, of a deed of gift dated April 7, 1787, from Jacob Carter to his son, George Carter, for a tract of land, 50 acres of Little Swamp, on the east side of Little Salthatchee, which had previously been granted the elder Carter. Both father and son were identified in the deed as residents of St. Bartholomew Parrish, Colleton County. The 1790 census showed Jacob Carter and his wife to be living alone, and George's family consisted of self and wife, seven boys under 16, and two girls.

1740 because he served in the Cherokee Expedition 1759-60 in S.C. under Col. Richard Richardson.
He was a Private in the 3rd South Carolina, Continental Line from 5 July ,
1779 - 1 July 1781 (nearly 2 l/2 years). He was paid for his service by
the War Department 8 July, 1794. He also served 2 or 3 other short terms.
His heirs received land on 7 Jan 1786 of 640 acres for service of 84 months. Deeded to Captain W. Shelby. page 299 of the Book Roster of North Carolina Soldiers. Mrs. Florrie Register Chilton of Edgewater, Florida was the first descendant of George Carter, R.S. to become a member of the DAR on the record of his service in the Revolutionary War. Her supplemental application was accepted Sept 1962. Her DAR # 386680. She descends through the daughter Sarah, wife of Isaac Mooday (Moody).
His wife's name is unknown. The lived in the vicinity of Carter's Ford,
Colleton Co, S.C. where all their children were born.
George Carter received a 50 acre tract on the Little Swamp on the east
side of the Little Saltehatchee, which had been previously been granted the Elder Carter (Deed Book Y -5, page 35) from his father according to Deed Records
in Charleston, S.C. - a deed gift dated 7 April 1787. Both father and son were residents of St. Bartholemew's Parish of Collecton County, S.C. 1790.
George Carter, wife, 7 boys under 16 and 2 girls were identified as
residents of St. Bartholomew Parrish, Colleton District, in the 1790 Census.
About 1808 George Carter and brothers Jessie and David, Cousins Jacob,
William, and James Carter, and other relatives moved to Tattnal Co, GA
and settled on or near the Ohoopee River.
George bought: 575 acres 17 Jan,1809 from Samuel Parrish
adjoining 575 acres from Philip Griner on Oct 25,1809
The State granted him 1000 acres on the Ohoopee on 2 Nov
1811
When Appling Co was opened to settlers (just across the Altamaha River),most of the sons moved to Appling Co. George Carter, Sr is listed as a resident of Appling in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery; he is listed as a resident of Tattnall Co in the 1820 census. He was living in Appling County Georgia in 1820 when he participated in the Georgia Land Lottery of that year. He and his wife had ten children.
He died in Appling Co about 1822, at about 80 year of age.He was the first Sheriff of Appling co.
