Note
Ralph Sheldon: Born 1605, Ashford, Derby, England; Died 1651, probably at sea; Married 27 April 1629, Bakewell, Derby, England; Barbara Stone: Born about 1607, of Bakewell, Derby, England. On 10 January 1650/1 a license was issued to him to pass beyond the seas. On immigration licenses of that period, destinations in Europe were typically named. "Beyond the sea" typically refers to immigration to America. If he started in the spring of 1651 for New England it is probable that he never arrived there, and either died on the voyage or was lost at sea. No mention of him has been found of him in New England, nor is he to be found in Derbyshire in the rolls of the hearth tax for that County in 1663, in which every householder is named. Thus his loss at sea seems the most likely explanation.

Occupation
Medad Pomeroy was a Blacksmith.
Note
Medad had land granted him at Massaca (Simsbury).93 For many years hew was town clerk; deacon; and rep. 1677, 83, 84, 86, 90, and 92.2
When Medad arrived at Northampton in 1659, he was welcomed by the authorities on account of his skill, knowledge of which had preceded him, and was granted a chest of tools and some land. Freeman 31 May 1661, and settled at Northampton, MA. Hee was Selectman, first in 1675 and reelected 27 times; Deputy in 1677, and reelected six times through 1692; County Treasurer 1698 reelected a number of times until the year of his death. It appears that in some years he held not less than six important town offices at the same time. Medad’s home-lot, granted by the town, was situated in the vicinity of Bridge St. Cemetery, but it is doubtful whether he ever occupied that lot. He bought an acre on Meeting-House Hill, where he resided until his death.94

The Pomeroy Anvil The Pomeroy Anvil is symbolic of the Pomeroy family in America. First given to Medad Pomeroy by the town of Northampton, MA in 1660, it was passed down through many generations of Pomeroy blacksmiths and gunsmiths. The original Pomeroy Anvil is currently housed at the Historic Northampton Museum. The shape of the anvil is typical of english anvils of the time period. There has been much speculation regarding where and when this anvil was manufactured. Some anvil scholars believe it was manufactured in England, others believe it was manufactured in the American Colonies.

Events
Note
He took the oath of freeman, in the Colony of Massachusetts, March 4, 1632. (Mass. Colony Records, Vol. I., p. 367.) He was one of the first settlers and proprietors in the town of Dorchester, and first selectman in 1633. (Hist. of Dorchester, 1859, pp. 33, 35.)
Note: Dr. Rodman did not know more about Eltweed (as he indicates in the above paragraph), but as of January, 2007 the Pomeroy line has been traced back to 1328. Eltweed was born on 4 July, 1585 in Beammister, DC, England, christened as an adult on 4 May, 1617 in Beaminster, Dorchester, Dorset, England, a month after he married his first wife Joanne Keech Kreech on 4 March 1617. Joanne apparently died with no known surviving children, and on 7 May, 1629 Eltweed married his second wife Margery (or Mary) Rockett, in Shewbourn, Dorset, England. It was a year after this marriage that he and Mary embarked for Massachusetts. – CA]
The spelling of the surname has varied from that of his own signature of Pumery to the present Pomeroy. The Christian name is variously spelled, Elty, Eltwed, Eltwud, Eltwood, and Eltweed; and there are suggestions that the crabbed MS. may mean Eldad, or even Edward. But as Eltweed Pomeroy the sturdy armorer and gunsmith is now known to a large circle of descendants, and this spelling will be followed.
In 1636-7, Mr. Pomeroy emigrated with Mr. John Warham’s congregation to Windsor, Conn. (Hist. of Dorchester, p. 75) Scanty as are the records of his life – something of his standing and character may be gathered from incidental references to him to be found in Stiles’s “Ancient Windsor,” Vol. I., p. 164 et seq. His place in the meeting house was on the “long seats” ; land was granted him in 1638 ; he had a house and lot in the Palisado, which he sold to Thomas Nowell in 1641 ; and he made gifts of houses and land to his son Caleb, and his youngest son Joseph, the latter getting “the little stone house built on his land, adjoining his dwelling house” which he allowed Mrs. Elizabeth, widow of Rev. Ephraim Huit, to build “in time of her widowhood, by way of courtesy; which she enjoyed ; and after her death, said Eltweed Pomeroy took for his own, at a price agreed upon between him and those which she desired to be her overseers and friends to order that little estate which she left for children ; which price he hath payed as they appointed him.”
Of his first wife, the mother of his eight children, we know only that she was named Mary, and died in Windsor, July 5, 1655. [Actually, Dr. Rodman did not know about Eltweed's wife in England, Joanne, and this Mary was his second wife – but the one with which he emigrated to the U.S. – and we do know a bit more about her than Dr. Rodman did 100 years ago. – CA] On Nov. 30, 1661, he married second [third – CA] Lydia (Brown), widow of Thomas Parsons. In 1665 he made generous provisions for his “dear and loving wife Lydia.”
In 1671 he removed to Northampton, Mass., to live with his son Medad. Tradition says that he became blind. He died at his son’s house in March, 1673, being probably about seventy-eight years old.

Mr. Blott came to Charlestown in 1634, and he probably removed to Concord, Mass., as the following deed, taken from the first volume of the "Suffolk Deeds," would indicate:
Robert Blott of Boston in the Massachusetts granted unto Samuel Stretton of Concord his house and land in Concord granted by the town to the same forty Acres more or less wth all the appertenances & priviledges thereunto belonging & this was by a deed of sale dat. 29 (5) 1648

Mr. Blott, at the time of his daughter's marriage, was a resident of Boston, Mass., his house being on the corner of Newbury (now Washington) Street and Blott's Lane. The latter was called Blott's Lane, for Mr. Blott, until 1708, when it was named Winter Street. This property was inherited by Dr. Ellis, and the corner of Newbury and Winter Streets was called Ellis's Corner until 1732. The following is a copy of a part of Mr. Blott's will:
"I Robert Blott being in perfect memorye Doe make this my last will and testament.
"I make Edward Ellis my sonne-in-law, Husband to Sarah, my Daughter, my Executor, and give unto him my house and the lot belonging thereunto, with all the appurtenances, also

"I Edward Ellis by God's help shall pay these legacies without fraud or guile before twelve months after ye death of my father-in-law," etc.
A codicil is added which makes some changes in the legacies, as Mr. Blott did not die at that time.

Henry is called "Doctor" in early records. He (and Elizabeth?) came (unmarried) to America on the ship "James" on August 17, 1635, in the company that followed Reverend Richard Mather (thought to be Elizabeth's brother). Henry settled in Dorchester, MA where he became a freeman of the colony and a member of the Dorchester Church, and where he married Elizabeth. Henry attained considerable prominence in local affairs, serving frequently on committees and in 1657 as constable. In 1658 the family moved to Northampton, MA. Henry was one of the "three Dorechester men" who it is believed were induced to settle there by Reverend Richard Mather. He was granted a twelve acre homelot. The Woodward's property extended from the east of the highway to the west bank of Mill River near the present location of Smith College in Northampton. He also received about one hundred acres in "Manhan Meadow".At Northampton, Henry became a leading citizen. He was chosen a selectman and "Commissioner to end Small Causes" in 1660. The following year, he served as a member of the jury at the first court held in that town, and was also among the group of eight persons who founded the First Church of Christ. Both he and Elizabeth were signers of the Church Covenant. In 1664 he served as surveyor of highways. In 1665, he was licensed to keep an ordinary tavern which continued in operation until 1681. During that time, it is believed that court meetings were held there. In 1682, he was called "Constable", being in charge of several prisoners to be transferred to Springfield. In addition, Henry had a grist mill and engaged in extensive farming. It may be assumed that he raised flax among other products for in a list of contributions to Harvard College made in 1672/3 it was noted:"Hinery Woodward 8 tb. flaxe at 8 s." He was killed at the corn mill.
Note
Arrived on the ship "James" with Captain Taylor 1635.
