Events

  • Note
Susanna was apprenticed to Henry Batchelor, brewer, of Dover......On the passenger list of 1637 (she came over on the "Hercules" from Sandwich, Eng. in 1936) with Henry Bachelour of Dover, brewer, and wife Martha and servents: John Bucke, Susan Bucke, Samuel Taylor, Margorie Walker......As the Bachelors were Friends, Susanna was probably brought up in that Society. In Essex Co. Court Records, we find that after susanna came out of her apprenticeship, Henry Bachelor sued her for slander, but lost that suit. She retaliated by suing him for detaining her baggage. Matthew, Jr. (ca 1590-1647) and Anne (Hawkins ca 1604-1643) Whipple. This begins the American story. The family was among 43 families to arrive in Ipswich in 1638 when the town’s population was approximately 480 and the colony’s population between 5 and 6,000. They received their first grants of land on Sept. 1, and survived the great snow storm of Dec. 15, the worst storm the English had known up to that time. The March 1639 storm blew over houses and a major drought began April 26. Described is the everyday life, tradesmen who served the community, crops raised, service on town committees, etc. Matthew’s will and estate inventory describes the family home as a veritable arsenal with three muskets, three pair of bandoleers, three swords, two rests; a fowling piece, a coslett, pike and rapier; and halberd.
