He came to America in 1683 at about age 24 and settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts. In 1686, he removed to what was later Woodstock, Connecticut as one of the original founders. He married Sarah Hadlock about 1687/1688. He was a deacon in his chuch as well as a husbandman and proprietor.

From the book: "Genealogy: Jeannette Grosvenor, Descendants of Nathan E. Grosvenor and Laura Fuller 1794-1973 (with his Ancestry)" (Chesterland, OH: Baker Printing Co., 1973), p. 9. "John Marcy was the son of the high sheriff of Limerick, Ireland. . . . as an adult, he joined Elliot's Church in Quatosett (Woodstock), Conn. In April, 1686, he, with others, took possession of Quatosett (Woodstock), Connecticut."

In the name of God, Amen. The 8th day of September 1714, I James Hadlock of the town of Amesbury, yeoman, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executrix, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and depose of the land in following manner and form.
Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my son Samuel 12 pounds, to my daughter, Sarah George 12 pounds; to my daughter Abigail Lowell twelve pounds; and to mydaughter Damaris 12 pounds; to my daughter Hannah twelve pounds; to my daughter Mary twelve pounds; to my daughter Ruth all my household goods after my wife's decease. To my son Joseph my gun and sword.
