It seems that Deborah and William didn't always agree. Rita Boutwell tells the following story about the death of William Eggleston:
It seems that on the morning of December 20, 1853 (Tuesday) William and Deborah had some sort of argument that ended in sharp heated words on both their parts. Deborah said something like this, "Mr. Eggleston, I hope I don't have to see you ever again." It seems he left for the woods to fell and haul logs, something all farmers did in those days.
He was cutting a tree when it twisted and fell onto him, crushing him under its massive weight. How long he lay there sufering, only his good Lord knows. The result was he died there under the tree. When darkness came and he had not returned home at the usual time, a search party found him dead under the tree. Deborah never could get over those awful words the two of them had that morning. She always told her girls to never send their man away to work on sour words - you might have to suffer them all your life!

Deborah Eggleston was married 10 months later to her older brother-in-law, Collins Eggleston, who had lost his wife, Susan, 25 May 1851. Together they had three children, 2 died young and one of William and Deborah's had died, making a total family size of eight children to raise.Deborah had eleven children in all.
